I just finished watching Just Wright and had to write about it. It's a romance movie, with basketball playing a main part. Kind of like Love & Basketball (which I love), but I think more girls could relate to this movie. The main characters are Leslie (Queen Latifah), Morgan (Paula Patton), and Scott (Common). The back story is that Scott is a Nets player and Leslie is a huge fan. Morgan is Leslie's cousin and shes trying to snag a baller husband. After a chance meeting at a gas station Leslie gets invited to Scott's birthday party, where he meets Morgan and completely forgets Leslie. They date for a while and he proposes to her. Everyone is happy, until he gets injured. Everyone counted him out, even Morgan who ends up leaving him. Everyone but Leslie. She's there for him throughout his recovery and he comes back better than ever. The whole time, he's learning about her and realizing just how much she knows him. She understands him like no one else can. He even questions why she's not dating and she says its because she hasn't found the one she can't live without. Then Morgan comes back into the picture and this is the part I want to talk about.

Morgan comes back with some bullshit story about how she was confused, how she her parents left her and she wanted to leave before he did the same. If it was sincere, I'd understand. But this comes just when Scott and Leslie are making that tentative step into couple territory, and what amazes me is that Scott even gave it a second  thought. Morgan is gorgeous, yes, but Scott isn't stupid. So my question is why he would even reconsider being with her again, when the one that makes him happy was by his side for the last couple of months? This applies to all guys, girls too. Why do they go back to good, when they already found fantastic? It just doesn't make any sense. This is coming from someone who's never been on a date, in which case most people would ask who am I to talk. True, I haven't had any experience personally, but if you have friends or family that date, and watch enough movies, you kind of become an expert. There are so many incidents that you can take wisdom from, without even being involved. Like having a crush on so and so but being too shy to talk to them. In that case, the best motto wold be 'You never know until you try' or 'Whats the worse that could happen?' Best case scenario: they feel the same. Worst case: they don't. Either way, life goes on.

Girls talk about finding true love, about finding "The One". I don't know, maybe its because I'm skeptical in general, but I don't believe in it. Not to say it hasn't happened, because any tale of having been married for 40+ years and still loving each other warms my heart. What I mean is that I don't think its common enough for people to go getting their hopes up. In fact, I think that's the worst thing they can do. Whoever they meet, they'll be so blinded by the hearts in their eyes that they won't even see the person as they really are. When it ends, they'll say I guess I didn't love them, and they'll be right; they didn't. Nowadays, that kind of real love and devotion is rare. Especially since standards have changed. Back then, the best you could hope for was someone to care for you and have kids with. Now, they have to make equal money, have a car, be good with kids etc. There's a whole list, varying by person. Honestly, most people aren't even gonna find half of what's on that list. What they do is settle for what they can, and the love comes later. Not to say you should always settle, but if you're searching for Mr. Right, you just might miss Mr. Right Enough. You think when you find all those qualities, you'll be completely happy, but sometimes you're wrong; about who and what you wanted.

I guess what I'm saying is that its good to know what you want, but don't list it like you're going grocery shopping. You think you want red velvet, but when you get home you realize you like pound cake better, so to speak. It's just smart to keep your options open, and a lot more fun as well. Oh, and if you were curious, Scott realized his mistake and went after Leslie to say that he loves her. Big romantic kiss, and scene. Easy enough in the movies, why not real life?

Waiting for Change

It's officially the first day of 2012, and as always we celebrated by watching the ball drop and eating soup joumou. On this day, many people make resolutions for themselves, concerning things they're going to change about themselves or their lives. I'm not one of those people. Honestly, sometimes I feel as if all the years blur together; not much happens to differ one year from another. However, each year instead of saying I'll do this or that, I get a feeling of an almost nervous excitement, because the new year holds so many possibilities. More importantly, it holds change.

There's a saying that goes Don't wait for change to happen, make it happen ; then again they also say Good things come to those who wait. It depends on your personal opinion but I like surprises, so a little waiting doesn't bother me. I believe in trying new things & having new experiences, so if I'm given that chance, I try my best to go with it. I read my horoscope today and it just put a smile on my face. There are people who don't believe in astrology, but whether you do or don't, its just a fun way to imagine whats to come. Helps to officially leave last year behind.

Speaking of last year, 2011 was kind of a big deal for me. My first year of college holds so many memories, some I'll always remember and some I'd rather forget. Definitely a lot of good times though. A lot happened but there was some general stuff like:

  • Having breakfast/ lunch between classes
  • Taking notes and falling asleep in class
  • Skipping class (bad habits die hard)
  • Walking around campus
  • Attending campus events
  • Exploring downtown
  • Hanging out with friends and just talking

It was little moments like these that made me realize it wasn't a dream, I was an actual college student. I'd like to say I came out of it not better, but different. Not afraid to take that jump and meet new people. Not afraid to say yes. And definitely not afraid to be myself. My caring, random, hilarious (in my opinion), slightly weird self  :)

Not to say there weren't a few bad times, but in a way they were also good. I learned more about myself and those around me. I learned that things didn't always turn out how I assumed, but sometimes they turned out better than I imagined. A smile was my main accessory that year and hopefully the same goes for this year.

2012, leggo.
