Grown

Well I'm backkk. It's been so long since I blogged and I definitely told myself it was going to be an everyday kind of thing. I was sitting here, just listening to some music and I was like, hey maybe I should go on that thing I have. You know, the one where I post a bunch of words about stuff and people read it (or not). Anyway I guess I'll proceed to inform you about what's been going on recently.

Sooo big news: I got my license! YAYY ME! *London voice* It was definitely nerve-wracking, but it's the best feeling ever to know that you passed. That was step one, now me and my dad are going to be going car shopping in the next few weeks. We find one that I like and he can afford, the road is mine. Not to say that's not the greatest thing ever, but getting my license just kind of put things into perspective. One, I'm getting old. I'm 19 now and I don't even know where all the time went. I remember when I used to consider 20 old, and now that's not too far off. Knowing that I'm going to be in charge of my own transportation is almost scary. Maybe not for some people; but I admit I kind of relied on my parents for a lot and I was okay with that. Now that's changing and it's almost like a roller coaster ride. You get that crazy climb up, where you're thinking about what's coming and whether you'll like it or not. Then you rush down as fast as possible and throw your hands up because you realize how much fun you're having. That's pretty much how I feel. I'm hoping that the climb down is going to be just as much fun. Two, I'm an adult. An adult! As of me hitting 18, the state legally considers me to be an adult. Maybe I just have the mind frame of a little kid, but I seriously don't feel like one. I know people my age that I call, "grown up". They look at me like, "but aren't you the same age...". In age yes, we're the same. That being said, I can't speak for experiences they were having and lessons they were learning while I was growing up. It's just how it is, and now it's my turn I guess. That kind of brings me to what I wanted to talk about. What is an adult? What qualities do you have to have to be considered one? Why do we sometimes consider it a bad thing, and at other times good? Kick your feet up kiddies, this is going to take a while.

To start, ever heard this phrase: Why don't we settle this like adults? When you hear that, what do you think of?

This?

Or this?

If you chose the first one, your idea of grown up is similar to mine. If you chose a slightly less sinister version of the second one, then congrats, because you have officially left your teenage years behind.

For most of our lives, we hear the word adult and we automatically think of our parents or older family members (about 30+). That's age wise, but how about how they behave? An adult is supposed to be someone you can run to with your problems. You can vent to your best friend, but they won't always have all the answers like Mom, Dad, or whomever tend to. The reason we expect them to know everything is because they've been through it all, so to speak. Sometimes they have and sometimes they haven't; for anything they haven't done, they typically try to give the best advice possible on how to deal with it. On the flip side, seeming to know everything is almost always why teens rebel during those hormone filled years. Mom and Dad are breathing down your back going, "I've been through that and it didn't end well". You're all like,"That was then and this is now. I'm not you." Not to get off topic but you get what I mean. After that time, we have to start coming to more conclusions on our own, with less help from our elders. That's kind of where I'm at right now, and I feel like I'm a late bloomer in this sense. Some people my age were making big decisions in their life before 14 or 15, and here I am just getting started.

However, I'm not completely oblivious to what being an adult means. If you know the phrase, With age comes responsibility, then you know what I'm talking about. Growing up means facing the consequences of of your actions, acting maturely when faced with a problem, and being serious more often than not. There are those that wish they could stay a kid forever (Peter Pan anyone?), and with good reason. The more you think about it, the more foreign and unfamiliar it is. There are those that embrace it, having been waiting their whole lives for this moment; and there are some that are a bit more hesitant, like myself.

Okay now onto the fun stuff. I've been rambling like growing up is some type of death sentence, when we all know its not. It gets hard, yes, but if done right there's plenty of good times to outweigh the bad. For example..

PARRRTTTTYYYYYYY B*TTTCCHHESSS!
Haha yes you guessed it. I consider partying to be one of the biggest perks of growing up. More importantly, attending all the fun parties. Not the family parties you're forced to go to, but the buck wild parties where you just let it all hang out. I haven't been to as many as I'd like, but you best believe as soon as I get the chance, I'm going to be hitting that dance floor.

A few others I can name are:
  • No curfew
  • Drinking is legal (whoop!)
  • Go anywhere you want, when you want
  • Gambling is legal (for those of you who do it with limits)

To finish, the most important truth is that It's your life. Finally, no more having to do eveything you're told. No more feeling like you don't have a say in the matter. It's your turn now, to live long and prosper (see what I did there).

I honestly don't even rememeber the point of all this, but I hope you nodded in agreement at least once and enjoyed the read. This is me, signing off. ^___^
